Introduction and Deadline
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must submit a fully completed application and all required materials to the John P. Burke Memorial Fund by June 1st.
Eligibility
Applicants must have already finished at least two (2) full golf seasons of employment at a Rhode Island Golf Association member club prior to the time of application (the current season does not count). Acceptable areas of employment include:
- Golf operations (examples: caddie service, golf shop duties, cart or bag room responsibilities, and practice range staff);
- Golf course maintenance personnel;
- Front-of-house clubhouse positions that directly serve golfers (examples: wait staff, food & beverage servers, on-course food facility or cart attendants, locker room staff).
Employment status must be either regular or seasonal, with a work schedule averaging at least 18 hours per week. High school seniors and students already enrolled in college are both eligible to apply.
Selection Requirements
To be considered for a Burke Scholarship an applicant must:
1. Demonstrate a satisfactory academic record from an accredited secondary school, a verifiable homeschool record, or an accredited undergraduate institution.
2. Provide the financial information requested by the committee.
3. Exhibit above-average character, integrity, and leadership, shown through participation in extracurricular, civic, and/or community activities.
4. Participate in an interview with the Scholarship Committee. (Interviews will only be scheduled once the application packet is complete.)
5. Ensure that all required materials and documents are submitted — it is the applicant’s responsibility to confirm receipt of everything.
Documents and Information to Include
Please provide copies of the following with your application:
1. Academic records — a high school transcript or transcripts for all college coursework completed since high school graduation.
2. Financial aid documentation — copies of:
- Student’s FAFSA,
- CSS/PROFILE (if applicable),
- Student Aid Report (SAR),
- Financial award letters from every institution to which you applied.
3. One letter of recommendation from your high school principal or guidance counselor.
4. One letter of recommendation from an officer or board member of the sponsoring club.
5. One letter of recommendation from a club member who is personally familiar with you.
6. One letter of recommendation from the sponsoring club’s Golf Professional, Course Superintendent, or House/General Manager.
Additional documentation (for example, a family income tax return) may be requested by the Scholarship Committee as needed.
