Future Journalism Teacher Scholarships

Overview The Journalism Education Association offers up to two scholarships of $1,000 each to students preparing to teach scholastic journalism. Eligibility Applicants must be college juniors, seniors, or graduate students enrolled in a program that prepares them to teach at the secondary-school level. Current secondary-school journalism teachers who are pursuing a degree to enhance their journalism-teaching skills are also eligible. Application requirements Applicants must submit a completed application that includes: - A 250-word statement describing why they want to teach high school journalism. - Responses to the three questions found at the bottom of the application form. - Two letters of recommendation, ideally from individuals who have direct knowledge of the applicant’s work with student journalists. - Official college transcript(s) demonstrating academic standing. Selection process A panel made up of classroom teachers and university professionals involved in journalism teacher education will review applications and select the recipient(s). Notification, recognition, and payment Winners will be announced by early September on the JEA website and through JEA social media channels. Recipients will be acknowledged at the Fall JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention. Scholarship funds are sent to the recipient’s college or university account after the selection is announced, and each winner will receive a certificate by mail.
