ASHRAE Undergraduate Engineering Scholarships

Overview
These scholarships support full-time undergraduate engineering or pre-engineering students enrolled in a post‑secondary program leading to a Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree within curricula that traditionally prepare graduates for careers in HVAC&R.
Eligibility
To be considered applicants must:
- Be enrolled full time in an undergraduate engineering or pre‑engineering program (BS/engineering degree) that is a conventional pathway into the HVAC&R field.
- Have a cumulative college Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and/or rank within the top 30% of their class.
- Satisfy at least one of the following institutional conditions:
- The school has an active ASHRAE Student Branch, or
- The program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), or
- The institution is accredited by an agency outside the USA that is a Washington Accord signatory, or
- The institution maintains a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ABET.
Scholarships Offered
$10,000 Awards
- Willis H. Carrier Scholarships (two awards): Two one‑year scholarships of $10,000 each awarded annually. Created by The Carrier Corporation in memory of its founder, who installed the first scientifically designed air‑conditioning system in 1902 and made major contributions to the industry.
- Gordon V. R. Holness Scholarship (one award): A one‑year scholarship named for a former ASHRAE President (2009–2010). Presidential theme: “Sustaining Our Future by Rebuilding Our Past.”
- Reuben Trane Scholarships (three awards): Three two‑year scholarships, each totaling $10,000 and paid as $5,000 per year. Established in memory of the founder of The Trane Company, an engineer, inventor and business leader whose company is among the world’s largest in the HVAC&R sector.
$5,000 One‑Year Scholarships
- Lynn G. Bellenger Scholarship: Awarded exclusively to women; named for ASHRAE’s first woman president (2010–2011). Presidential theme: “Modeling a Sustainable World.”
- Frank M. Coda Scholarship: Created in memory of ASHRAE’s former Executive Vice President, who served the Society from 1981–2004.
- Charles E. Henck Scholarship: Established by Charles E. Henck, Fellow Life Member of ASHRAE. Preference will be given to students attending schools in ASHRAE Region III (Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C.). The recipient may be considered for an internship.
- Duane Hanson Scholarship: Named for the president of Gayner Engineers, a mechanical/electrical consulting firm in San Francisco, California.
- Prem Jain Memorial Scholarship: Special consideration for full‑time undergraduate engineering students enrolled in programs accredited by Washington Accord signatories in Asia or South Africa. Named for an ASHRAE Life Member and founder of the ASHRAE India Chapter.
- Alwin B. Newton Memorial Scholarship: Named for an industry pioneer credited with 219 patents.
- William P. Chapman Scholarship: A one‑year scholarship named for a former ASHRAE President (1976–1977).
- ASHRAE General Scholarship: Two one‑year scholarships of $5,000 awarded annually.
- ASHRAE Legacy Scholarship: (details as announced by ASHRAE)
$3,000 One‑Year Scholarship
- Henry Adams Scholarship: A one‑year $3,000 award established by Henry Adams, Inc., a Baltimore‑based consulting firm, in memory of its founder who was a charter member and the sixth president of ASHVE (ASHRAE’s predecessor) in 1899.
Application Instructions
To be eligible for consideration, all application materials must be received by the posted deadline. Required items include:
1. Official transcript: Must be sent either by mail, via an authorized electronic transcript transfer service, or directly from your registrar’s office. Photocopies of transcripts are not accepted.
2. Three signed letters of recommendation: One must come from an instructor or faculty advisor, one from a current or former employer, and one additional character reference (not a family member). If your campus has an ASHRAE student branch, the branch’s faculty advisor may serve as one of these three recommenders.
