Jimmy A. Young Memorial Award
Scholarship Sponsored by American Respiratory Care Foundation
Introduction
The American Respiratory Care Foundation offers an award of up to $1,000 in memory of Jimmy A. Young, former AARC president, who was a major supporter of respiratory care education. While the Foundation prefers that a school official or an accredited respiratory training program submit nominations, individual students may also initiate an application so that qualified candidates are not excluded if their program does not submit on their behalf. Candidates who are of minority background will receive preference. The award package includes a certificate of recognition, coach-class airfare, one night’s lodging, and registration for AARC Congress.
Eligibility
- Enrollment in an accredited respiratory care training program is required.
- Applicants must meet the academic standard described below.
- Although school or program representatives are the preferred nominators, students may self-initiate an application.
- Preference is given to nominees of minority origin.
Required Application Materials
1. A fully completed application form.
2. Official verification of current enrollment in an accredited respiratory care program.
3. An official transcript showing a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or an equivalent standard).
4. An original, referenced paper on a respiratory care topic. The manuscript must have a cover page that lists only the paper’s title; no identifying information (name, address, school, etc.) may appear anywhere in the paper to ensure unbiased review.
5. Two letters of recommendation:
- One from the program director or another senior faculty member, and
- One from the medical director or a physician instructor.
These letters must confirm: a) the program’s approval of the submitted paper, b) the candidate’s suitability for the award, and c) the candidate’s potential for a career in respiratory care.
Applying Online
In addition to basic personal details, online applicants must attach required documents as follows:
- Undergraduate award applicants: Upload the original referenced paper described above. The paper must include a title-only cover page and be free of any identifying details in the body.
- William W. Burgin/Robert Lawrence award applicants: In addition to the paper (when applicable), submit a personal essay of at least 1,200 words explaining how the award will help you complete your degree and pursue leadership goals in health care. The essay should include a cover page with the author’s name, mailing address, and phone number; the essay content itself must not include identifying information (name, address, school, etc.). See the program’s Paper Submission Guidelines and Points to Consider in Submitting an Essay for further instructions.
Important Notes
- Applications are considered incomplete until all requested supporting documents have been received; incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
- Previous undergraduate award winners are permitted to reapply.
- Previous postgraduate award recipients may apply again and may receive funding for a second and third year provided they remain in good standing in their advanced degree program and are judged to be the most deserving candidate by the Board of Trustees or its appointed selection committee.
