Introduction
The Canton Audubon Society (CAS) awards an annual $2,000 scholarship in memory of Arnold W. Fritz, the organization’s founding president. Notice of the scholarship and application instructions will be made public no later than October 1 of each academic year.
Purpose
The scholarship is intended to financially support college students who plan to pursue studies in environmental science, conservation, natural history, other nature-related fields, or environmental law.
Eligibility
- Applicants must live in or attend college in one of the following counties: Ashland, Carroll, Columbiana, Coshocton, Guernsey, Harrison, Holmes, Jefferson, Knox, Mahoning, Medina, Muskingum, Portage, Stark, Summit, Tuscarawas, or Wayne.
- The applicant must be entering the fall term as a junior or higher at an accredited college or university at the time the award is made.
- Applicants must be enrolled full-time according to their institution’s definition.
- Majors may be any field related to the scholarship’s purpose.
- Only one member of a family may be considered in a given year.
- There is no age restriction.
- The completed application packet (application, references, essay, and transcript) must be postmarked by April 1st.
Application and Submission Requirements
- Applications must be either typed in 12-point font or larger, or neatly printed in blue or black ink. Illegible applications may be discarded.
- Submit three letters of recommendation.
- Include a concise, typed essay of 250 words or fewer describing yourself and how you intend to contribute positively to the environment.
- Provide an official college transcript.
Selection Criteria
The selection committee will evaluate applicants using a combination of the following:
1. A completed application form.
2. The required essay (250 words or less).
3. Academic performance (minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale).
4. Three letters of recommendation.
5. Evidence of past involvement or commitment to environmental stewardship.
Transcript Requirement
An official college transcript must accompany the application. Applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA as a full-time student (4.0 scale) to be eligible for consideration.
