Steel Intern Scholarships

Submit your application for the Steel Intern Scholarship, which includes a PAID summer internship and a one-year scholarship worth US$7,500. We are currently accepting applications for the 2026-2027 academic year until October 6, 2025. Please ensure you have read all the information provided below before submitting your application.

Scholarship Details

The Steel Intern Scholarship includes a mandatory PAID summer internship at a steel producing or steel-related company in North America, followed by a one-year scholarship of US$7,500. We offer up to 50 of these one-year awards.

The highest-scoring applicant will receive the Premier Intern Scholarship, which includes a one-year scholarship of US$12,000 and a paid summer internship. Please note that the number of recipients from Non-High Income Countries (NHIC) cannot exceed 15% of the total number of scholarships awarded, and the scholarship value for NHIC recipients will be 60% of the full amount ($4,500).

Applicants must be willing to commit to a paid summer internship at a North American steel-related company and must be a citizen of the United States, Canada, or Mexico. Relocation may be necessary for the internship period. AIST will assist with internship placement, but applicants are encouraged to seek information from steel companies at career/job events. If an internship is self-placed by the recipient, it must be pre-approved by AIST. Accepting an internship at a company not specifically related to steel manufacturing will result in disqualification.

Recipients may be disqualified if they rescind an accepted internship offer from within the program. To remain eligible for the scholarship, recipients must receive a satisfactory performance review from the internship company and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be studying engineering or engineering technology disciplines, computer science, data science, environmental/sustainability science, or safety or industrial safety programs. Applications are accepted from university sophomores, juniors, and seniors planning to attend their first year of graduate school.

Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a four-year undergraduate (minimum of 12 credits) or graduate program (minimum of 8 credits) at an accredited North American university. Full-time workers are not eligible. Applicants should have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and must be a citizen of a USMCA country (USA, Canada, Mexico). They must also be willing and able to relocate for the summer internship. While not required, student membership to AIST through the Material Advantage Student Program will enhance the application.

Application Process

Applicants must submit the following documents in PDF, unprotected, format:

  1. A current résumé detailing work experience, extracurricular activities, and any leadership positions, including AIST student membership through the Material Advantage Student Program.
  2. An essay (maximum two pages) outlining professional goals, explaining interest in a career in the steel industry, and discussing how the applicant's skills could benefit the industry.
  3. At least one recommendation letter (maximum five), written by a professional familiar with the applicant’s work and/or interests. Letters from a representative of a steel-related company and/or a discipline-related professor will carry more weight.
  4. A current academic transcript or other proof of academic standing from a university. Both official and unofficial transcripts are accepted and must include the university and applicant's name.
  5. All application documents must be in English.

Applications will be scored based on Steel Industry Interest (30%), Grades (20%), Recommendation Letters (30%), and Extra-Curricular Activities (20%).

Submitting Your Application

Complete applications, including all required documents, must be submitted electronically by October 6, 2025. Scholarship recipients will be announced in December. For any questions about the scholarships or the application process, please contact Lori Wharrey at +1.724.814.3044.
