James Wilson Anderson Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Wyoming Community Foundation
Overview
The Jim Anderson Scholarship supports graduating seniors from Evanston High School who plan to pursue college at the University of Wyoming. The award reflects Jim Anderson’s lifelong connection to Evanston and his belief in the value of higher education.
About Jim Anderson
Jim Anderson grew up in Evanston, Wyoming. He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II and then spent his working life at the Blyth and Fargo Co. general store. After retiring, Jim remained active in the community: he participated in the Senior Citizens Group, served for many years as a representative of AARP, traveled widely, and belonged for a time to the Cowboy Joe Club. A devoted fan of the Cowboy teams, he kept mentally sharp by following current events — even as his eyesight declined he read the daily paper with a magnifying glass and followed C-SPAN and other news programs. Known for an excellent memory, Jim was a trusted source of local Evanston history.
Because the Great Depression and his wartime service prevented him from continuing his own education, and because he never married or had children, Jim chose to give back to his hometown by establishing a scholarship. He specified that recipients use the funds at the University of Wyoming.
