Howard D. Graves Scholarship

In 2007, a scholarship was founded in honor of Howard D. Graves (1939-2003), a respected figure in the academic and military communities. Graves, who passed away from cancer in 2003, held the position of Chancellor of the Texas A&M System from 1999 until his death. His distinguished career also included service as a U.S. Army officer and Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy from 1991 to 1996. A West Point graduate of 1961, Graves was a Rhodes Scholar and earned three degrees from Oxford during his military tenure. He also served as the personal aide to two Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral William J. Crowe and General Colin L. Powell. This scholarship is intended for students who aspire to study at a Texas A&M System institution.
Eligibility Criteria
A) The applicant should be a graduating high school senior from one of the 26 northernmost counties of the Texas Panhandle;
B) The applicant should have a cumulative high school GPA of 75 (equivalent to 3.0 on a 4.0 scale); and
C) The applicant should demonstrate leadership skills and community involvement.
Scholarship Value
The scholarship provides $500 per semester for a maximum of 2 semesters.
Scholarship Conditions
The disbursement of each semester's scholarship is dependent on the following conditions:
A) The recipient must enroll in college in the fall semester immediately after being selected;
B) The recipient must maintain full-time student status (usually 12 credit hours per semester for undergraduate studies);
C) The recipient must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher while in college; and
D) The recipient must attend any college or university within the Texas A&M System and choose any major.
