Texas Educational Opportunity Grant Program
Scholarship Sponsored by Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board
Intro
The Texas Educational Opportunity Grant (TEOG) provides financial support to eligible undergraduate students attending qualifying two-year public colleges in Texas. Below are the conditions you must meet, the types of institutions that participate, and the application steps.
Eligibility (initial award)
To qualify for a TEOG award, an applicant must meet all of the following:
- Be classified by the college as a Texas resident.
- Be registered with the Selective Service or qualify for an exemption from registration.
- Demonstrate financial need, as evaluated by the institution.
- Be enrolled at least half-time (undergraduate level) at an eligible Texas two-year public institution.
- Have attempted no more than 30 semester credit hours (credits earned through dual enrollment or by examination are not counted toward this limit).
- Not already hold an associate or baccalaureate degree.
- Not have a conviction for a felony or for an offense involving a controlled substance.
Maintaining eligibility (renewal)
To continue receiving TEOG funds, a student must:
- Continue to satisfy the program eligibility criteria listed above. (Note: after the initial award, a student may be eligible to continue even if they have since attempted more than 30 semester credit hours.)
- Comply with the institution’s annual academic progress or program requirements. Contact your college’s financial aid office for the specific academic standards you must meet.
Eligible institutions
Only Texas public two-year institutions participate in TEOG, including:
- Community colleges
- Public technical institutes
- Public state colleges (for example, Lamar State College–Orange and Lamar State College–Port Arthur)
How to apply
- Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If you are not eligible to file the FAFSA, you may submit the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA). Both applications become available on October 1 each year.
- Many institutions use a January 15 priority deadline for TEOG consideration; applicants who file by that date may receive priority. Check your college’s financial aid calendar for any institution-specific deadlines.
- Your campus financial aid office will review your application materials, determine TEOG eligibility, and notify you of any award.
- Important: TEOG funds might not be disbursed immediately at the start of the semester. If you have questions about when funds will be available or about your eligibility, contact your institution’s financial aid office.
