Advancing Care Scholarship for Adult Learners

INTRODUCTION
The Basu Plastic Surgery Advancing Care Scholarship for Adult Learners was established by Dr. C. Bob Basu to assist, encourage, and uplift Texans aged 30 and older who are enrolled in graduate-level programs and training to become licensed medical professionals—physicians or nurses. Texas residents pursuing careers in qualifying medical fields are eligible to apply for this $1,500 award.
PERMITTED USES OF THE AWARD
The $1,500 scholarship is intended to help cover tuition and other education-related expenses. Examples of allowable uses include, but are not limited to:
- Textbooks and course materials
- Supplies (paper, pens, notebooks, etc.)
- Required technology
- On-campus dining
- Housing
- Transportation
AWARD PAYMENT AND TAX INFORMATION
The scholarship will be paid directly to the recipient as a cash prize. The chosen recipient must provide information required to issue a 1099 tax form, including their Social Security number. Any tax liabilities resulting from receiving the scholarship are the responsibility of the student.
ELIGIBILITY
To be considered, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
1. Be a United States citizen and a resident of Texas.
2. Be age 30 or older at the time of application.
3. Be pursuing a degree or career pathway at an accredited institution of higher education that leads to licensure as a medical practitioner (see eligible degrees below).
4. Submit one letter of recommendation that includes current, valid contact information for the recommender.
5. Complete the application form, provide original responses to the essay prompts, and upload the completed application along with the required letter of reference via the scholarship application portal.
ELIGIBLE DEGREES/PROGRAMS
Programs and credentials that qualify include, but are not limited to:
- Medical/Doctoral: MD, DO, DPM, DDS/DMD, OD, PsyD, PharmD, DNP, PhD and similar doctoral medical degrees
- Nursing: RN, NP, CNM, CRNA, LPN and related nursing credentials
- Masters-level medical/public health degrees: MPH, MSN, MPAS, MMS, MN, MPharm, MSM and similar master’s programs
- Physician Assistant credentials: PA, PAC
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Applicants must submit the completed application, original essay responses, and one letter of recommendation through the designated upload link on the scholarship application page. The recommender’s letter must include current contact information for verification.
