Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers Scholarships
Scholarship Sponsored by Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers
Overview
The Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) offers three academic awards via its Presidential Awards Program to foster interest in tribology and lubrication engineering: the E. Richard Booser Scholarship (undergraduate), the Elmer E. Klaus Fellowship (graduate), and the Jeanie S. McCoy Scholarship (female students). Administered by the STLE Presidential Council, these awards subsidize student research projects that advance education or careers in tribology. Since 1995, STLE has awarded a total of $182,000 to more than 40 recipients to help launch careers in the field.
E. Richard Booser Scholarship
Purpose and eligibility
This scholarship is intended to motivate undergraduate students in engineering or science to pursue graduate study or careers in tribology by giving them hands-on research experience in the discipline. Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate engineering or science program.
Selection considerations
Candidates are evaluated on a faculty or educator letter of recommendation, the relevance of the proposed project to tribology, and the overall quality of the proposed research experience.
Award amount
$4,500 (paid to the student).
Additional eligibility notes
Recipients of the Jeanie S. McCoy Scholarship may apply for the Booser if the new research proposal is substantially different from their prior submission. A student may not receive the Booser scholarship more than once.
Elmer E. Klaus Fellowship
Purpose and eligibility
Designed to support graduate students pursuing advanced degrees or careers in tribology, the Klaus Fellowship funds graduate-level research in the field. Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate engineering or science program when the funded research begins.
Selection considerations
Selection is based on a letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor or educator, the relevance of the proposed research to tribology, and the quality of the research plan.
Award amount
$5,500 (paid to the student).
Additional eligibility notes
Graduate students who previously received a Booser or McCoy award as undergraduates may apply, provided the proposed research is substantially different from the earlier submission. A student cannot receive the Klaus Fellowship more than once.
Jeanie S. McCoy Scholarship
Purpose and eligibility
The McCoy Scholarship recognizes a deserving woman pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies in engineering or science that prepare her for a career in tribology. Applicants must be female and enrolled in an applicable engineering or science program.
Selection considerations
Applicants are judged on a submitted essay suitable for publication in TLT magazine, a faculty or educator letter of recommendation, and extracurricular activities.
Award amount
$5,000 (paid to the student).
Additional eligibility notes
Students who have previously received the Booser Scholarship may be eligible if their new research proposal is substantially different from the earlier submission. Individuals who have received the Klaus Fellowship are ineligible for the McCoy Scholarship. A student may not receive the McCoy Scholarship more than once.
