Introduction
For many years Phillips Law Firm has represented families affected by serious motor vehicle collisions. In 2026 the firm is expanding that support to survivors who are pursuing higher education. Undergraduate and graduate students who have experienced a traumatic car accident are invited to apply for the A Second Chance Scholarship, a one-time $2,500 award for a student who submits a video sharing their accident story and how it reshaped their future employment plans.
Who may apply (Eligibility)
- Must be enrolled in or accepted to an accredited college, university, or graduate program in the United States.
- Must be able to document that they experienced a traumatic car accident at some point in their life.
- Must be at least 18 years old at the time of enrollment.
- Must be a U.S. resident and in good academic standing.
- Applicants must provide basic personal and academic information as part of the application.
- The video/essay must be original work addressing the scholarship topic.
Not eligible
- Employees of Phillips Law Firm or their children.
- Previous recipients of the A Second Chance Scholarship.
- Applicants who refuse or are unable to participate in an interview with a Phillips Law Firm representative if selected.
- Applicants who submit the same essay or video for multiple scholarships or reuse the same entry across different years.
Video requirements and topic
- Video length: up to three minutes.
- Topic: describe how the car accident affected daily life and how it altered your plans or prospects for employment/career.
- Begin the video by stating your full name and that you are applying to the A Second Chance Scholarship.
- Record in a well-lit environment, keep the camera steady, and limit background noise to ensure clear audio.
- Editing and the use of copyright-free music or graphics are permitted to improve presentation.
- AI may be used only to generate B-roll footage. AI must not be used to write the script, fabricate accident evidence, invent characters, or alter voices. Any inappropriate use of AI will result in automatic disqualification.
How to submit
- Complete the scholarship application form on Phillips Law Firm’s website and include the URL to your unlisted video essay.
- All application materials and the unlisted video link must be submitted by July 31, 2026 to be considered. The scholarship award is $2,500.
Deadline, review period, and communications
- Application deadline: July 31, 2026.
- After the deadline, the selection committee will review submissions and expects to complete evaluation within one to three months.
- During the review period the firm will not accept inquiries, messages, or phone calls asking for application status updates. Applicants and their families should not contact the firm about submitted applications.
Selection and notification
- Only complete applications submitted by the deadline will be reviewed. The committee will evaluate entries without regard to age, race, religion, gender, national origin, familial status, or other protected characteristics.
- The winner will be announced on Phillips Law Firm’s website and social media, and the firm will publish a blog post and press release with additional information. The $2,500 award will be mailed to the accredited institution designated by the recipient. Non-winners will not receive individual notifications.
