Fairrilla Emory White Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Zeta Phi Beta Sorority
The Fairrilla Emory White Scholarship was created in honor of a significant African American educator and founding member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Kappa Zeta Chapter. Mrs. White, who was born in Dallas on October 7, 1898, was set to be recognized as Dallas' "oldest living teacher of record," but sadly, she passed away just two days before the award ceremony. A trailblazer in education, Mrs. White completed her studies at Dallas' Colored High School in 1916 and Bishop College in Marshall, Texas in 1920. She served as a teacher at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA before returning to Dallas in 1922. She taught mathematics at Dallas' Fred Douglass and Phyllis Wheatley Elementary schools and, starting in 1924, at Booker T. Washington High School.
