The Houston Council of the Blind (HCB), committed to supporting the educational and social needs of people who are blind or visually impaired, is offering its Fall 2024 scholarships, including the RL Bartlett Technology Scholarship.
Who is eligible
- Applicants must be legally blind or blind. Proof of visual impairment is required and must be provided by a licensed professional (for example, a physician or a vocational rehabilitation counselor).
- Must live in the greater Houston area or in nearby counties.
- Must plan to attend, have been accepted to, or be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited college or vocational/trade school (minimum of twelve (12) credit hours). Postgraduate students completing required coursework or graduate students enrolled in an accredited graduate program are also eligible.
- Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale or equivalent), using either high school or college GPA as applicable.
Required supporting documents (all must be submitted electronically)
- Completed HCB Scholarship application (enclosed) or the Robert L. Bartlett scholarship application (page 5).
- Documentation of visual impairment from a licensed professional (e.g., doctor or vocational rehabilitation counselor).
- Copy of high school transcript(s) and a copy of your college/vocational/trade school acceptance letter. (If you have completed at least one semester of college or are a college graduate, submission of high school transcripts or a college acceptance letter is optional.)
- If you have already earned postsecondary credits, provide transcripts from all colleges or vocational schools attended.
- Two letters of recommendation dated within the past year.
- Any other materials requested on the application form.
Submission instructions and deadline
- All materials must be uploaded through the HCB website; documents must be submitted electronically. Scanned documents will not be accepted.
- Complete applications and all supporting documents must be received by July 5, 2024.
Selection process and timeline
- Candidates will be evaluated on academic performance, community service, financial need, and the degree of visual difficulty.
- Final decisions will be made and applicants notified by August 7, 2024.
- Scholarship awards will be presented at the Houston Council of the Blind meeting on August 17, 2024.
